Well, just another bad experience I guess?
23rd Feb 2006.... one of the worse encounter I've ever faced in my life.. but to think back, it is kinda funny.W came over to find me after my work and we went for an early dinner at KFC, then proceed to Gurney Plaza for the Parkson Special Bonus Link Members' Sales. As usual, we will walk around here and there til we feel bored, before I actually make a decision on buying the things that I have actually intended to buy. We left Gurney Plaza after that and stopped somewhere nearby Gurney.. I was chatting with W in the car before I leave for home, and there's a sudden loud knock on my window.. goshhh.. cops...
There were actually 2 cops, and I guess they are doing a normal routine check, so I open the window.
As expected, the cop asked for my driving license and my ID, I get my handbag from the back seats and took it from my purse. The cop then asked for W's ID. They wrote both our details down in a book.
One of the cops started to ask us questions nonstop like as if we committed a crime. I don't mind them asking if what they are doing are just normal routine. I was asked on what I am doing there, and I told the policeman that I am just having a chat in the car before I leave. The policeman told me that it is not right for a girl and a guy to sit in the car alone, and he wants us to follow him back to the police station. He also threatened to call up my parents and tell them I am doing something inappropriate in the car.
I am 24 years old, and I never knew that what I did was wrong. I mean, I am Chinese and my friend is a Caucasian with Malaysia PR. We are both non-Muslim and I believe so that they won't frame us for 'khalwat' but then what is the fuss all about then?
Both W and I asked the policeman couple of times, on what we did wrong, but he just ignored our questions. He was being rude to W as well, and said, "Do you know what country this is? This is not your country, so don't talk so much!" Is this how our Malaysian cops treats people?
The cop was still holding our ID and keep on saying what we did is wrong. He asked W to get down the car and check his pockets, and also lift up his shirt to see if he's properly zipped. I was in the car still, with my big handbag on my lap. The cop then asked me to take away my handbag. I asked if he wants to check it but he said no. As I removed my handbag, the cop took his torchlight and look at my lap. I was wearing a skirt, so I just put back my handbag and on lap since there's nothing for him to see, and he shouted "Alih beg tu!" .... I do not know what he's trying to see. I felt like I am being treated like a crime. It was like as if they caught us doing something against the law, but all we did was just chit chatting.
The police said he wants me to go to the police station, and calls my parents to come and pick me up, so that they will know what happened. I said I don't mind since I did nothing wrong and he tell me I'm talking too much.
After dragging for half an hour, I am still there in my car and the cops are still there. Passerby keeps looking and staring at us, and this is just such a disgrace.
The cop asked if W is my boyfriend or not, and said if you want to chitchat, go to a coffee shop, not in the car. He also said I should just get a hotel instead. I felt disappointed seeing the way the cops, while I did nothing against the law. I said, I am working in this area and he doesn’t believe me. He asked what I am working as and etc, so I showed him my name card.
The cops then finally return both our ID, but still don't want to let us go. I asked for my name card back but he said he wants to keep it; saying perhaps can call me out for a coffee in future. Is this part of a cop’s job? What has happened to our Malaysia cops?
